It is the goal of the Amanda McPherson Foundation to have an Amanda’s Corner in every elementary school in Ventura County starting with our school district, Simi Valley Unified. An Amanda’s Corner consists of the equipment and supplies needed to support the education of the special education students at a particular school. This can include computers, special software, adaptive equipment and other items that support children that require additional assistance to be successful in school. Each school principal is asked to submit a request for all needed items. Please use the link below to download the Amanda's Corner Proposal form. Members of the board of the foundation meet with the principal and the special education representative from the school to determine which items will benefit the most children. Each schools needs are different and requests currently range from $40,000 to $3,000. The foundation has currently budgeted approximately $7500.00 per school to start an Amanda’s Corner at each school. Once each corner has been started, the foundation will re-evaluate any additional needs at each school. The best-case scenario allows for an Amanda’s Corner to include a tree painted on the wall near the equipment. The tree has the foundation’s logo and the words “Amanda’s Corner” on it and a local painter is donating the painting. If facilities do not allow for the tree, a small plaque with Amanda’s logo will appear on the item purchased. The important part is that the teachers and students have access to the tools that are required for early intervention so that these children have the best chance of success. Our foundation believes in early intervention and support services through the school district. We support those children who require minimal intervention and those who require complete support. The foundation believes that every child deserves the support they need. As of January 2007, the foundation has started Amanda’s Corners in nearly every school in the Simi Valley Unified School District and several in other districts. We are currently accepting requests from all schools in Ventura County. We are well on our way. The principals, teachers and students are very excited about this program, which allows them to purchase the extra items that they need. The foundation will continue to raise funds through traditional fundraising programs such as our annual events and grants. Funds are also raised through our Change for Change program that is directed towards the children of the community. The funds raised through Change for Change will go directly towards Amanda’s Corner. |
